Hello, everyone. I’m a first-year student in the Department of Social Welfare. At this time, I’d like to tell you about the club I belong to.
I don’t have many friends in my department now because we can’t go to campus for in-person classes. So, I haven’t had such a pleasant school life as I had imagined, and I felt like it was going to break my heart when I entered the university. However, it was the club I joined that supported me through these times.

I belong to the Birdman club, a joint club between Waseda University and Japan Woman’s University. Have you ever heard of the Birdman contest? It is a contest held every summer at Lake Biwa in which handmade, human-powered airplanes capable of carrying one person try to fly as far as they can in the sky over the lake. University and adult teams from all over Japan spend a year designing and then building their own airplanes from scratch. We gather the materials for the planes, build them by hand, conduct experiments, and fly them. We make improvements over and over again. For this once-a-year event, many people give their all and fly their planes with many thoughts and feelings in mind.

I am currently working with my seniors and friends in the same year to build an airplane for next summer’s contest. It’s a lot of work, but every day is very fulfilling and fun. The days of working together with my club mates to create the airplane is my treasure.

I would be happy if our airplane could fly a long distance, but it is not always possible. There are many times when an aircraft does not fly well, even if it is made according to a good design. Still, we continue to challenge ourselves every day. Sometimes, I wonder, “Why we are so absorbed in our work?” and “Why is everyone so desperate to make a plane that will discarded after only one use?”

The answer, I believe, is because the airplane carries our dreams and gives us beautiful memories of achieving a goal together.
Together with my fellow club mates, I will do my best to contribute to the success of the airplane this year.

皆さん、こんにちは。
私は、社会福祉学科の1年生です。今回は、私が所属するサークルについて皆さんに伝えていきたいと思います。
学校に行くことができない今、学科に友達はいません。自分の思い描いたような楽しい学校生活はなく、入学してすぐに心が折れそうでした。しかし、そんなときに私を支えてくれたのがサークルでした。

私は、早稲田大学と日本女子大学の合同のサークルである、鳥人間サークルに所属しています。みなさんは鳥人間コンテストを知っていますか？毎年、琵琶湖で夏に行われている大会です。人を乗せて、手作りの飛行機で空を飛びます。
全国の大学や社会人チームが、1年をかけて自分たちで１から飛行機を作ります。飛行機の設計も自分たちで行います。飛行機の材料を集めて、手作業で作り上げ、実験を行い、飛ばします。何度も改良をして作るのです。
1年に1回しかない大会のために、多くの人たちが全力を尽くし、色々な思いを抱きながら機体を飛ばします。

来年の夏の大会のために、私は今、先輩と同い年の仲間とともに機体を作り上げています。大変なことも多いけれど、毎日がとても充実していて楽しいです。
仲間たちとともに、１つのものを作り上げる日々は、私の宝物です。

長い距離を飛ばせたら嬉しいけれど、絶対に飛ぶとは限りません。設計通りに作っていても、うまく飛ばないことの方が多いです。それでも、私たちは日々挑戦を続けています。時々、「なんでこんなにも夢中になっているのだろう」そして、「最後は、消えてなくなってしまう機体を作るだけなのに、なんでみんな必死なのだろう」と疑問に思う時があります。

その答えは、飛行機が私たちの夢を運び、一緒に目標を達成した美しい思い出を与えてくれるからだと思います。
仲間とともに、私は今年も機体を飛ばすために頑張ります。
