On November 25, 2020, the Department of Japanese Literature held an international online workshop on how to learn "Kuzushiji" for curators at the Guimet Oriental Museum in France.

Kuzushiji are writing characters that were once used in Japan until maybe 100 years ago.
I was in a group of three students that had to work together to give a presentation on Kuzushiji at the workshop. We had prepared images and simple English slide materials for presentations with zoom screen sharing.

I will briefly introduce the contents of each student's presentation.
The first part of our presentation was titled "Applications and sites to use when learning cursive at home". We introduced a site where you can easily check the shape of cursive on the Internet and another site where you can actually find the original kuzushiji character by manually entering it.
The second part of our presentation was titled "About textbooks and lesson contents for learning kuzushiji ". We explained kuzushiji using the textbooks used in a Japanese literature class and the kuzushiji images read during the class.
The third part of our presentation was titled "How to remember the kuzushiji that you already studied." We taught the learning methods that we usually use, such as not only reading kuzushiji but also actually writing it.

Thanks to the preparation, we were able to do the presentation smoothly during the workshop. In addition to the presentation, we also demonstrated how to actually read kuzushiji scripts. After we finished, we received a thank-you note from the curator.
I think it was a wonderful experience for us to have international exchange sharing the unique Japanese kuzushiji characters with other cultures.

2020年11月25日、私たち日本文学科では、フランスの国立ギメ東洋美術館の学芸員の方へ向けて、「くずし字」の学習方法についてオンライン上で国際ワークショップを行った。

「くずし字」とは、100年ほど前まで日本で使われていた文字のことである。
私はくずし字のワークショップを行う学生3名のグループの一員として、仲間と協力して発表の準備をすることになった。発表はzoomの画面共有を通して行うため、画像と簡単な英語を盛り込んだスライドの資料を用意した。

それぞれの学生が発表した内容について、簡単に紹介する。
1つめのタイトルは「自宅でくずし字を学習する際に使用するアプリケーションやサイト」という内容だ。インターネット上の、手軽にくずし字の字形を調べることができるサイトや、実際にくずし字を手書き入力して元の文字を探せるサイトについて紹介した。
2つめのタイトルは「くずし字トレーニングの為のテキストと本学の授業内容について」である。日本文学科の授業で扱っているくずし字のテキストや、授業中に読んだくずし字などを用いて説明を行った。
3つめのタイトルは「一度覚えたくずし字を忘れないために」である。くずし字を読むだけでなく実際に書いてみることなど、自分たちが普段行っている学習方法について発表した。

ワークショップ当日は準備の甲斐もあり、順調に発表を進めることができた。また発表の他にもくずし字を実際にどのように読んでいるかというデモンストレーションなども行った。
発表後、学芸員の方からは感謝の言葉をいただくことができた。
私たちにとっても、「くずし字」という日本独自の文字を通して国際的な交流ができたことが、とても素晴らしい経験であったと感じている。
