ニューヨークでの経験

　I participated in a one-month language-training program in New York last spring vacation. During the training period, I worked on various programs, such as interacting with the New York branch of JWU alumni association and participating in a Japanese class at PACE University.
　What I struggled with the most was conversations in English. It happened far too frequently that I couldn't clearly communicate what I wanted to say in English and couldn't pronounce things correctly. So, I wasn't good at English from the beginning. The hardest thing was having conversations with other nonnative speakers. There were many nonnative study abroad students and homestay students from Brazil, France, and Italy. So, I realized how difficult it is to communicate with people who have different pronunciations and vocabulary. However, it became a nice opportunity to practice paraphrasing and learning foreign cultures other than the U.S.
　In class, I had to do journal writing and presentations. Although I have created reports and have done presentations in JWU classes, it was hard for me to understand and create them in MLA style. However, I was so glad to receive good feedback and grades from my teacher. Also, everything led to increasing my confidence and deepening my friendships by working on assignments. In the end, I completed the assignments with the help of my friends.
　This month-long program was an exciting and great experience in my life. My time in New York was hard, and I have happy memories. However, I don’t want to forget what I learned from the program.

　私はこの前の春休みに1ヶ月間のニューヨーク英語研修に参加した。研修期間では、現地の大学での語学研修のほかに、日本女子大学の同窓会のニューヨーク支部の方々と交流したりニューヨークの大学の日本語の授業に参加したりなど様々なプログラムに取り組んだ。
この研修で私が1番苦労したのは英語での会話だった。元々英会話が得意な訳ではなかったため、言いたいことが上手く英語に出来なかったり正しい発音が出来なかったり伝わらないことが日常茶飯事だった。中でも大変だと思ったことは、非ネイティブの人との会話だ。大学の留学生との交流はもちろん、ホームステイ先には私の他にブラジルやフランス、イタリアから来た学生がおり、それぞれ特徴的な発音だったりお互いに知らない単語が出てきたりと意思疎通の難しさを実感した。しかし、別の単語に言い換える良い練習ができるほかアメリカ以外の他国の文化を学べる素敵な機会になった。
　また、授業ではジャーナルやプレゼンテーションといった課題が課せられた。日本でも期末レポートや発表があるため全くの初めてという訳ではなかったが、書式が全く別物で正しいスタイルを理解したり作成したりすることが初めての取り組みで難しく感じた。しかしながら、大学がない日や放課後を使って一所懸命取り組んだ課題で先生から良いフィードバックと評価をもらえて嬉しかった。また、課題を取り組むにあたって友人たちと協力して完成させたことで、自分への自信につながりそして友人たちとの仲も深めることができた。
　この1ヶ月間はとても楽しく、これからの人生の中でも数えられる程の良い経験になった。楽しかったと思うだけで終わらせず、苦労も楽しかった思い出も学んだことを活かせるような時間を送れるようにこれからも精進したい。
