Why do we learn English?

We are given textbooks and memorize them eagerly for the purpose of getting high scores on tests. However, what will we find beyond all of this? Please think deeply about this: English is not a measure of how intelligent we are, but is a tool for communication.

Thanks to online English lessons, I got to know how exciting speaking English is and started to dream of being an English “speaker,” not just a “learner.” Then, a chance unexpectedly came to me and I decided to join a group called Model Production (MP). This is a student group which creates English musicals from scratch. From the moment of inception until the performance day, we talk only in English.

Many people from various backgrounds participate in MP because it is independent from universities. Also, participants are attracted because we use English as a common language. All of them have stimulating and unique stories and I am greatly inspired by them. For me, who has not yet been outside Japan, the days I spend at MP is just like studying abroad or even better.

So, why do I learn English? It’s simply because I want to “use” it!

It means that there are more people to talk with, there is more information to access, and there are more opportunities to grab. Knowing English is an investment that has almost no risks and has huge benefits. It’s also thanks to English that led me to joining MP and making wonderful friends. This is exactly why I cannot stop learning English.

MP is my second step, and now I’m thinking of studying abroad next spring, which is going to be my third step.

Your future is not about something that someone gives you. Instead, the key to your future is proactively finding something and reaching for it yourself.

我々は、なぜ英語を学ぶのだろうか。学校では教科書を与えられ、テストで良い成績をとるためにそれをひたすら暗記する。しかし、その先にあるものは何だろうか。少し立ち止まって考えてみてほしい。英語とは、人の頭の良さを測るものさしではない。コミュニケーションツールなのである。

オンライン英会話をきっかけに、私は英語を話す楽しさを知った。そして、「学び手」という立場を逸脱して「英語話者」として何かに挑戦したいと思い始めた。そんな折、絶好の機会が訪れた。縁があって、東京学生英語劇連盟という団体に参加することにしたのだ。この団体は通称MPといい、英語劇を一から創り上げる学生団体である。結成から公演終了までの間、団員間では英語のみを使う。

MPは特定の大学に属さない学生団体で、そして英語を共通言語とするからこそ、さまざまな背景を持つ学生が集まる。彼らは皆刺激的で個性的な経験を持っていて、私はとてつもない衝撃を受けた。まだ日本を出たことのない私にとって、MPでの体験はまさに留学のようだった。いや、それ以上かもしれない。

では私はなぜ英語を学ぶのか。その答えは単純で、「使うため」である。

英語という鍵を手にして、目の前の世界は限りなく広がった。その鍵で開いた扉の向こうには、会話できる相手、アクセスできる情報、掴めるチャンスがあった。英語を学ぶこととは、リスクが限りなく低くリターンが限りなく大きい投資なのだ。ここまで述べてきたように私がMPに参加し最高の仲間をつくることができたのも、英語のお陰だった。だからこそ、英語学習はやめられないのだ。

MPは、私の第二の挑戦だった。第三の挑戦として、次の春には留学をしたいと考えている。

未来という扉を開く鍵は、誰かがくれるものではなく、自分で掴むものなのだ。
